POSITION:Managing Attorney for Metro Volunteer Lawyers

REPORTS TO:Director of Pro Bono Programming

SALARY:$83,000-$88,000 (commensurate with experience and education) 

EMPLOYMENT TYPE:  Full-Time

JOB LOCATION: Hybrid In-Office-remote: Office location: 1905 Sherman St., #400, Denver, CO 80203 (must be able to reliably commute to this location for in-office days, travel primarily within the Denver-metro area, and have reliable bandwidth for remote work)

Summary of Job Duties: Metro Volunteer Lawyers (“MVL”) is the pro bono program of the Denver Bar Association in collaboration with the Adams/Broomfield, Douglas/Elbert, Arapahoe, and First Judicial District Bar associations with a mission to bridge the gap in access to justice.The Managing Attorney is responsible for managing the daily operations of MVL and overseeing MVL Programming.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Managing Attorney is responsible for the following:

  • Managing and supervising staff and daily activities of MVL;

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining an efficient system of case assignment and follow up, and overseeing placement of cases;

  • Supervising and training staff and interns/externs to perform all assigned responsibilities;

  • Developing and coordinating operation of statistical data tracking and quality control mechanisms;

  • Assisting with the preparation of annual budgets for all programs and assuring adherence to budget;

  • Creating and facilitating opportunities for education, training, and recruitment through the creation of CLE programming and website upkeep; 

  • Acting as liaison with and fostering good working relations with other participating bar associations, courts and court staff in counties where programs operate to assure program effectiveness, and to customize program operations as appropriate or required to meet their needs;

  • Coordinating pro bono activities with law firms' pro bono coordinators; 

  • Acting as liaison with local law schools and special interest groups such as the Sam Cary Bar Association, the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, the Colorado Indian Bar Association, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, the Colorado Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Bar Association, local Inns of Court, and other groups to coordinate the delivery of quality legal services to the indigent;

  • Assisting with the application and submission of grant applications;

  • Assisting with the reporting as necessary on any grants awarded;

  • Assisting in facilitating fundraising efforts including the existing evergreen campaign, an annual auction, Denver Bar Association Young Lawyers Division events, and similar events;

  • Recruiting and retaining volunteer lawyers to represent clients and provide consultations as appropriate;

  • Overseeing the MVL Advisory Board.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school, admission to practice law in state of Colorado.

  2. Prefer five years’ minimum practice of law in public or private sector.

  3. Preferred experience in fundraising/ grant writing.

  4. Previous employment or volunteer experience performing legal services for low- and moderate-income people.

  5. Excellent written, oral, and listening communications skills.

  6. Excellent organizational and planning skills.

  7. Previous supervisory experience preferred.

  8. Experience in and demonstrated ability to interact with a wide variety of persons and constituencies with diverse economic, educational, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

  9. Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office, and database platforms.

Working Environment: Hybrid. Office environment, often shared with other staff, but the Managing Attorney has a dedicated office. Physical Activities: Majority of the time is office activity (sitting). Requires the ability to lift at least 20 lbs. Excellent work-life balance with flexibility around in-office hours, so long as legal services to the public are not compromised.
